Understanding Medicare · Hampton Roads

Medicare,
without the maze.

Four parts, a few choices, and a lot of jargon. Here's what each piece actually does, in plain language, so you can walk into any decision knowing what you're looking at.

The big picture

What Medicare is, in one breath.

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease. It's built from a few parts that each cover different things. Once you see how the pieces fit, the rest gets a lot less intimidating.

The four parts

A, B, C, and D, decoded.

You don't need to memorize these. You just need to know they exist and what each one is for.

A

Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health services. Most people get Part A premium-free.

B

Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and some medical equipment. Part B has a monthly premium.

C

Medicare Advantage

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare offered by private companies. Often includes drug coverage and extra benefits, with network rules.

D

Prescription Drug Coverage

Helps cover the cost of prescription medications through private plans. Which drugs are covered, and at what tier, varies plan to plan.

Common questions

The things people ask me.

Do your services cost anything?

No. I'm paid by the carrier when you enroll in a plan, never by you. You get a licensed local advisor at no cost.

Do you offer every plan?

I do not offer every plan available in your area. The information I provide is limited to the plans I do offer. You can always contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all your options.

Can we meet virtually?

Yes. Phone and video appointments are available, or we can meet in person across Hampton Roads, whichever is easier for you.

What if I already have a plan?

Then a quick annual review is worth your time. Plans change every year, and so do your doctors and medications. A 20-minute check tells you whether to keep it, move, or hold.
